PRAYER AND HALAL

How Do You Plan Prayer and Halal Food on the Road in Istanbul?

There are prayer rooms at Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen, mosques are close by in every part of the city, and most food is halal in practice, though asking is still best. On an hourly booking a prayer stop is simply one of unlimited stops; on the airport drive, tell the driver and it is arranged where possible.

Are There Prayer Rooms at the Istanbul Airports?

Yes, there are prayer rooms at Istanbul Airport and at Sabiha Gökçen. In Turkish a prayer room is called a Mescit, so use that word when you ask or when you read the signs. We do not give their locations here, because it is easier to ask the nearest member of staff, who will point you to the closest one from wherever you are at that moment.

If you have booked our Arabic meet and greet at Istanbul Airport or at Sabiha Gökçen, tell the team member that you would like to pray before or after passport control, and mention it to us when you book as well.

Is It Easy to Find a Mosque in Istanbul?

Yes. There are mosques in almost every district of the city, and you hear the call to prayer across most of it, from the great mosques of the old city to the small neighbourhood mosque. The ablution area is usually in the mosque courtyard or nearby.

Shoes come off at the door of the prayer hall, as you know, and many mosques have racks for them. Modest dress is advisable when entering the great mosques, which also welcome visitors from all over the world.

The great mosques usually have a women's section, while in small mosques the space may be limited, so it is worth asking. Questions about the rulings of prayer while travelling are for each traveller and the scholars they consult, and we do not cover them here.

How Do You Stop to Pray on the Way From the Airport?

Tell the driver, and it is arranged where possible. It depends on the route, the traffic and where the nearest mosque is. It helps to mention it when you book a fixed-price car from Istanbul Airport or a fixed-price car from Sabiha Gökçen, especially if your landing time is close to a prayer time. You can also pray at the airport before you get in, then continue on your way.

If you would prefer a driver who speaks Arabic, some of our drivers do. Ask for one when you book, and we confirm in writing whether one is available on your date.

Why Does an Hourly Booking Suit Those Who Pray on Time?

Because a prayer stop is just an ordinary stop that needs no special arrangement. Booking a car with an Arabic-speaking chauffeur with Marhaba Service includes unlimited stops within the city, plus fuel, tolls, parking and waiting, and the plan can change during the day. The minimum is 4 hours, and there is no single-hour rate:

Car4 Hours8 Hours
Mercedes Vito€199€250
Mercedes Sprinter€225€300
Mercedes E-Class€275€350
Mercedes S-Class€500€700

For Friday prayer in particular, tell the driver in the morning which district you prefer, because the great mosques fill up before the prayer.

Is the Food in Istanbul Halal?

Most food is halal in practice, as that is the norm in ordinary Turkish restaurants. But this general picture does not replace asking, especially in tourist areas, international restaurants and hotels. Travellers differ in what they are comfortable with, and the decision is yours.

  • Ask the restaurant owner directly: Helal mi? It means: is it halal?
  • If it matters to you that no alcohol is served on the premises, ask: Alkol var mı? It means: is there alcohol? Some restaurants do serve it.
  • Arab restaurants are plentiful in Aksaray and Laleli, so asking is easier if you stay nearby. See Istanbul Airport to Aksaray.

On an hourly booking you can make a restaurant one of the day's stops. Waiting is included in the price, so there is no need to rush your meal or your prayer.

Before the day of an hourly booking, write to us with the places you would like to visit and any prayer or meal stop that matters to you. The driver then knows your plan from the start, and you can still change it during the day.
